A Student's Guide to Philosophy examines these questions: Who is a philosopher? Can philosophical thought be avoided? What have philosophers written over the ages? And why should we care? In this critical essay, these and other questions are posed and answered by one of America's leading philosophers, Ralph McInerny of the University of Notre Dame. Schools of thought are examined with humor and verve, and the principal works of philosophers and scholars are recommended.

A good introduction to students on some major philosophical questions and themes: what constitutes wisdom and common sense; sophistry; the fact-value distinction; philosophy in an age of science. Although the author is an apologetics of Plato, Aristotle, and Thomism, he does engage such thinkers like Heidegger and Nietzsche. Unfortunately, some major thinkers are neglected or downplayed - Spinoza, Mill, Hegel, Marx - but this is somewhat redeemed with the appendix that lists some of the major thinkers in western philosophy.
